So, they feel this p-wave as it propagates through whatever surface they're standing/lying on?

Yes, we can feel them too, it's just sometimes the arrivals are small enough that sensitive critters feel them and we don't. If it is a large enough series of p-waves we feel them too. P-waves are just compressional waves, like sound. They can travel through ground, air and water. Many describe the initial arrival as a pop or thud. That's just the sound it makes as it interacts with the structure we're in. The s-waves are shear waves, they oscillate side to side, and cause the swaying motion that is generally larger, slower and damaging. They cannot occur in air or water (although, they can cause buildings or swimming pools to sway and then cause water to slosh around. There are other seismic waves that arrive even later and can really cause damage called surface waves. P- and S-waves always occur, surface waves sometimes don't.

Ah, sorry, didn’t see the link. Kitty felt the very first p-wave arrival and hit high gear. Sometimes, if far from the epicenter, the p-wave can be seconds ahead of the more powerful s-waves. Animals are more sensitive to them and will react quicker making potions think they are prescient. In this case it looks like the video is pretty close to the source with the p-wave and s-wave arrivals not far apart. Kitty heads for the hills while human tries to figure out what’s going on.

Here is a good example of a dog sensing the earthquake before the humans. You'll see the dog bolt upon feeling the p-wave and then the human senses the s-wave and bolts (not recommended, as we adhere to drop, cover and hold on). At about 45 seconds in the video, you'll see another camera view that includes a glass window. You can see the subtle p-wave arrivals in the vibrating window and the dog, already in transit from the other room, fly by as the s-waves come in.

Yep. Gets its feelers up for a couple of seconds. The NBC News link below edited the cat out of the video I see and put in other damage.

Always heard about animals being able to sense an earthquake before it happens...but never saw it before.

In the video from that article there's a clip of a cat inside a room, and the cat senses something is about to happen before the actual shaking occurs.
