I saw lightning bugs last night. It's summer time in Jersey!
We have them in our yard this year! This is the first I've seen of them in OK at all! And I agree with you about cicadas...we heard our first one yesterday! Perfect timing! (though usually, they start up in May around here... but the weather has been mild so far this year)
I got to see a few in Ohio while I was there. They weren't out in force like they probably are now, but....at least I saw some. They are SO much of the magic of summer, aren't they?
Cicadas are the sound of summer for me. they should be out any time now.
Me too. It wasn't until I had done a mixtape, with a summertime theme, that I realize the song was riff on this one, with direct references in the lyrics. I'll have to see if I can dig up that playlist. Following Sinatra with Sublime is so subversive.

I did a mix CD for a friend in California called The Other Side of Summer (with Elvis C's song as title track). I discovered a really cool Buffalo Tom song that I had not noticed in his heyday, called "Summer."

Thanks for posting both of those together. I just did a mash-up of the two of 'em, delaying the Doc and Merle one by 29 seconds. It kinda works, in an interesting manner. Ha!
Oh! Thank you Thank youTHANK YOU for this! I remember this version from back when I was 16 or so. I had always loved it and could no longer remember who it was who did it. It was one of the lost pleasures of my youth. You have fulfilled a life-long quest of mine.

I usually associate them with the second half of summer, though...that's when they were out in force in Ohio.
